Fabric Bow Tutorial

March 2nd, 2011

Bows are my all time favorite decoration pieces since I started following the Japanese 109 style fashion. Over the years I kinda develop my own way of making bows. It might not be the right way but it work and the bows look just as cute. The process is super simple and only minimum sewing is required.

All you need to make this type of bow is a small piece of fabric and some threads and needles. Almost any kind of fabric will work for this project, the more sturdy and thicker fabric can make the bow shape firmer and stand on its own. Thinner fabric might need a little support inside like interfacing to maintain the perfect shape.

This is a easy level project that can be done with or without a sewing machine. Hand sewing result will look as good as the machine sew ones mainly because the seems will be hidden anyway inside our project.

I am using the left over fabric form my black sway skirt re-modification. This material is not stretchy and just thick enough but not too stiff which is a perfect fit for my bow project. I didn’t need interfacing because the material is strong enough to form a gorgeous looking bow on it’s own. I made 7 bows from my left over portion fabric. I can wear them separately in different occasion or pin or sew them onto my re-design black sway mini skirt.

The bow essence give the already gorgeous looking skirt a different feeling. After adding the bows on the cute re-design skirt, it almost look like the costume from the fairy tale story. Bows are great decoration for fashion especially once you find out my way of making these affordable & fashionable bows in just a couple of minutes.

Here’s my tips for DIY fabric bows if you are interested:

Step 1- Cut a piece of rectangle fabric

The good thing about my project is there is not right or wrong. You can use any size rectangle fabric that you have in your hand. They will come out looking as nice. If the fabric is too long and thin, you can fold them or overlap it a little more. You can adjust it however you like to the desire shape.

Step 2: Fold the right sides together

Fold the fabric right sides against each other and make sure there is an overlap in the middle portion. The overlap part will be our little hole for flipping the bow inside out later on. So the opening is best to stay in the middle because we can easily hide with the middle cover.

Sew Only The Side And Leave A Window Across The Middle

Step 3: Overlap the fabric and sew the two opened sides

Once you fold the fabric, we can hold the shape with our hand and bring it to the sewing machine. We want to sew the 2 open sides shut and leave a window laying across the middle of the rectangle. After sewing it will almost look like some old fashion pillow case.

Step 4: Cut the corner & flip it insides out

Once the sides are sew together, use a scissor and cut the 4 corners off. the extra fabric will make the corners too bulky after flipping. Using the finger or a pointy object like chopstick to help poke the 4 corners out. We can easily flip the whole piece inside out revealing the right side of the fabric.

Step 5: Gather the middle portion and to make a bow

Use your fingers and gather middle part. It might be a little bulky because of the overlap fabric. Don’t worry about that and just hold it together with your fingers or a clip.

Step 5: Add a piece of fabric in the middle and sew it together in the back

Adding a small piece of fabric in the middle where we gather earlier can permanently hold the bow shape. Just a small strip of left over fabric will do the trick. Try to keep the connecting part in the back so we can use needle and thread to sew it together. You can also use fabric glue to hold it in place if you don’t know how to sew or just want an easy way out.

The finishing product can be use as hair or personal accessory. Hot glue the bows onto a hair clip or pin and you can easily clip onto any clothing. The bows match the mini skirt perfectly, the color and material make it suitable for a lot of different occasions so I’m sure this will be one of my favorite accessory in the future.
