Silicone Whipped Cream Deco-den Tutorial

March 15th, 2011

Easy & simple kawaii looking whipped cream decoration using minimum material. These gorgeous soft serve ice-cream look-a-like accessories  are getting really popular in Japan and Asian countries. This tutorial’s goal is to teach everyone how to do it yourself at home with minimum cost possible.

When i say EASY, I mean EASY. No mixing , no mess, almost as easy as buy the can and squeeze it out. Of course mine is using silicone to replace the real eatable cream and icing. You will be surprised how simple the process really is, but the result looks fantastic.

Main ingredients you’ll need is 100% silicone. The one I purchased is from Home Depot, I’m sure other hardware stores and big chained supermarket sells the similar product too. Silicone is use for bathroom seal purposes mainly, prices for a regular tube is less than $5 USD. I choose Dap Kwik Seal Plus premium kitchen & bath adhesive sealant because it says brighter white and high gloss finish on the package so it is perfect for this task.

Other materials you can use as add on decorations are small plastic flowers cabochons, rhinestones and other deco-den materials. My tutorial do not need  piping bag but we will need at least a star icing tip (99 cents) and some clear tape to secure it to the tube’s tip.

The star shape icing tip can help create the whipping cream look. Learning some simple piping skill online will come in very handy. I simply search icing piping techniques, learn a couple tricks for cake decorating and we are good to go. Of course, my last cake decoration project was a great training experience for me and I believe it sparks my interest for this subject.

While you are doing the research, look up other people’s deco-den project to get some design ideas. Look around and see what other’s are using and what can you learn from them. I think I might try to mix in some paint to create strawberry and chocolate cream for my next project. Modeling paste is going to be my next experiment as well if I can find the right kind here. Anyway, there are so many inspiration, I just wish I have more free time to try them all. (I’ll try my best to post detail ASAP)

Alright, back to my silicone whipped cream deco-den project, lets show you the basics skills and techniques so you can go on and try it as well. Doing it this way is way cheaper than purchasing the Japanese whipped cream decorating tubes (usually cost $12-20/per tube on Etsy). Total cost for this tutorial is about $6 USD for the silicone and icing tip. Other decorating pieces like buttons, plastic parts, beads, chains, ribbons, lace trims, bows and rhinestones are available on Etsy and local craft store as well for very affordable prices.

Here’s the step of DIY silicone whipped cream deco-den:
1. Prepare Material

2. Secure The Tip

3. Squeeze & Have Fun

4. Add Embellishments

Tips: If you made a mistake, simply use tissue paper to wipe it off while it is wet and start over. A little water can also help remove residue with no damage to surface.

Overall, this is a fun weekend project, some people make a career out of it, but I don’t think it is for me. When it come to decorating for my own stuff though, I am all for it. At least silicone can easily cover and fill in for large area, so it is defiantly my first choice as background for my deco project.

It looks great! but i was wondering if this silicone whipped cream would stick on a silicone phone case

    • pinkydoll says:

Yeah, believe me, it will stick to almost any surface (especially smooth ones). It just take a long time to dry so you have to be patient. Give it a day to fully dry off and it will last for a long time.

Hi there! Your work pieces are super awesome !! Totally in love with it. However, does the silicon whip cream you use really works? Because the reviews on the amazon page isn’t very good. Or it wouldnt affect if it’s use as a deco den ?

    • pinkydoll says:

I mean the result definitely work for me. The material doesn’t seem like it will ever dry entirely, so it looks great and it will keep its shape, but you probably don’t want to stack it against other things because it might stick to other surfaces. It wasn’t hard to separate them but it might create damages if you are not careful. Anyway, I made some more colored whip cream deco-den accessories and I should post the tutorial soon. For such a low cost material compare to what Japanese charge for theirs, I think silicon is a great substitute for amateurs like me. ^_^ Try it, and let me know what you think.

    Hi
If I mix the silicone with fabric glue, will it stick to the fabrics???????????

  10. Milku says:

how can you make it shiny?

  11. Andrea says:

How or where do you get the silicone whip cream?

    • pinkydoll says:

I was using the DAP Kwik Seal Plus silicone straight from the tube as my whip cream, once it dry it will look like real whip cream

  12. lala says:

Ohh I have been looking for something that is shiny so i don’t have to seal it with a gloss. I use DAP Alex Plus and its matte and it looks all well but attracts wayy too much dust.
I have been searching all over the internet to find a silicone substitute that is like SoTotallyLame’s icing, I am pretty okay with the piping but I cannot figure out what type of whipped cream/silicone she uses and she doesn’t answer the question, understandable since its her business, but I really wanna know to improve my business of decoden. I live in a place where i would be the first to do decoden as a business so i want to find the best stuff locally since ordering from Japan is a no-no.

  13. sweetricecake says:

i bet if you go on etsy or amazon and sell, a lot of people would buy some of the stuff you made! ^ u ^ And you did a really good job doing all that :D Nice Work!

  14. Lulu says:

Do hey last long. Mine have started to crumble when used a few times??

  15. Macy says:

Hi where do you get the DAP Kwik Seal Plus from in Australia?

    • pinkydoll says:

try hardware store or home improvement store, I used to live in Melbourne but never purchase these types of item locally there. Kmart or other large supermarket might have that too. I will try online website if you cannot locate the item in store ^_^ good luck

  16. Zun says:

Hello.. Love your tutorial and do u wait for it to dry or do you bake them just like the polymer clays? :) thank you..

  17. Bianca says:

Where did you get you tip to fit the tube (DAP)?

    • pinkydoll says:

it won’t fit perfectly, that why i use tap at the end of the piping tool to hold it in place. Don’t~ worry, the result won’t be much different

Do you wash the silicone off of the icing tip? If so, is it easy?
